How do I clean keyboard keys?

With a barely damp cloth and nothing else, wiping along each key rather than across the gaps. Liquid running between keys is the failure that costs money, and it is entirely avoidable.

The rule that matters

Nothing wet enough to run. A cloth damp enough to lift grease and dry enough that no liquid reaches the gaps.

Along, not across

Wiping across the keys pushes dirt into the gaps. Wiping along each key takes it off the surface.

What causes most failures

Drinks. A single spill into a keybed is the most expensive accident in this catalog, and no cleaning routine prevents it — placement does.

Check your own manual before you plug anything in. Voltage, polarity and current draw differ from model to model, and the manufacturer’s figures take precedence over anything written here. A supply of the wrong polarity can damage a pedal in seconds, phantom power is safe for most microphones but not for every one, and the required voltage is printed next to the socket or stated in the manual — not inferred from a connector that happens to fit.

The questions players ask

Can I use alcohol wipes?

Check the manufacturer’s guidance for your instrument. Some finishes tolerate it and some do not, and the damage is cosmetic but permanent.

What if a key sticks?

Stop using force. Sticking usually means something has fallen between the keys, and prising at it can break the key’s pivot.
