The best electric guitars and starter packs for 2026

Most electric guitars in this price bracket are sold as packs, and a pack is two products in one box: a guitar that can be set up and played for years, and accessories that vary from useful to disposable. We separate them. Each page states the pickup layout, the scale length, the bridge type and the tuner type, then says plainly which parts of the bundle are worth keeping — usually the guitar, the strap and the cable — and which are commonly replaced within a month, usually the picks, the plectrum-thin strings and the practice amp.

The models we recommend

  1. 3rd Avenue XF Ultimate Kit

    Full size 4/4 · fixed bridge · 10 W amp · nine accessories

The most complete accessory list in this group: amp, tuner, cable, stand, gig bag, strap, spare strings, picks and a capo, around a full-size guitar with three single coils and a fixed bridge.

Best for: A first electric where the accessories should not be nine separate orders.

  2. Pyle ST Guitar Set

    Paulownia body · 22 frets · 5 W amp with headphone out

A lightweight starter set built around a paulownia body and a birch neck, with a 5 W amp that has a headphone output, a drive switch and volume, treble and bass controls.

Best for: A light first guitar for a young player, practiced mostly in headphones.

  3. Squier Sonic Stratocaster Pack

Three single coils · tremolo · Frontman 10G amp included

The Stratocaster starter pack from Fender’s own budget brand, Squier: three single-coil pickups, a tremolo bridge, and a Frontman 10G amp with clean and overdrive channels and a headphone socket.

Best for: A first electric that will still be worth playing in five years.

Need by need, within electric guitars

A guitar that lasts for years

The quality of the frets, the nut and the hardware decides intonation and tuning stability. That is what the money buys and what you feel every day.

Pyle ST Guitar Set

Starting with everything needed

Packs with an amp, a cable and a bag avoid discovering after the purchase that an electric guitar on its own makes no sound at all.

Pyle ST Guitar Set

Being played seated for two hours straight

A solid mahogany body weighs close to four kilos, and the weight is paid for in the lower back before the session ends. The stated weight counts as much as the timber.

Squier Sonic Stratocaster Pack

Who each family suits, across electric guitars

First instrument
A complete pack gets you playing straight away. The quality of the factory setup then counts for more than the brand.
Overdriven sounds
Humbucking pickups take distortion without hiss. That is a pickup choice before it is a guitar choice.
Clean, nuanced sounds
Single-coil pickups give a definition humbuckers do not have, at the price of more audible hiss.

What you gain and what you give up, on electric guitars

Single coil against humbucker
The single coil is clear, detailed and noisy; the humbucker is thick, quiet and less defined. Neither is better — they serve different music.
Vibrato against tuning stability
A vibrato bridge opens up effects and complicates tuning stability and string changes. A fixed bridge is more stable and simpler.
Price against setup
A cheap guitar well set up plays better than an expensive one badly set up. Factory setup varies enormously between individual instruments.

Frequent questions on electric guitars

Do I need an amp to play?

An electric guitar on its own is nearly inaudible. A small amp or an interface with headphones is essential from day one.

What is string action?

The height of the strings above the frets. Too high and the guitar tires the fingers; too low and it buzzes. It is a setting, not a permanent flaw.

Should a new guitar be set up?

A setup by a luthier often transforms an entry-level instrument. It is the best-spent money on a first guitar.

How often should strings be changed?

As soon as they lose their brightness or become hard to tune, which depends entirely on how much you play and how much you perspire.

Can the neck move?

It moves with humidity and the season, which is corrected at the truss rod. A routine adjustment, not a sign of poor quality.

Does a child need a small-size guitar?

The size must allow reaching the first frets without contorting. A guitar that is too big discourages physically.

How do I clean a guitar?

A dry cloth over the strings and neck after every session. Perspiration is what oxidizes strings and frets fastest.

Does the number of frets change anything?

Twenty-two or twenty-four frets decide access to the top two octaves, and also shift the neck pickup. On a first instrument the difference shows after two years, not before.

What stays with you, on electric guitars

A cheap guitar well set up plays better than an expensive one badly set up: a visit to a luthier is the best investment on a first instrument. Single coils and humbuckers serve different music, and an electric without an amp makes no sound.
