The best bass guitars and bass packs for 2026

A bass is chosen on scale length before tone. A long-scale instrument at 34 inches is the standard the repertoire and the strings assume; a short-scale at 30 inches fits smaller hands and shorter arms and has its own, entirely legitimate sound. Neither is a beginner version of the other. We compare scale length, pickup configuration, active or passive electronics, and — in packs — whether the amp has enough headroom to reproduce a low B without collapsing, which is where undersized bass practice amps fail.

The models we recommend

  1. VISIONSTRING Full-Size Bass Pack

    Dual cutaway · 20 flat frets with markers · 10 W amp

A beginner-focused bass: a C-shaped neck on a light body, a flat 20-fret fingerboard with clear note markers, one pickup and one volume control — deliberately as simple as possible.

Best for: A first bass for someone who wants the fewest possible controls in the way.

    7.2/10

  2. MAX GigKit Bass

    Full-size bass · 21 frets · 40 W amp with headphone out

A complete bass package built around a 40 W amplifier — four times the wattage bundled with most starter kits — plus a stand, strap, 3 m (10 ft) cable, spare strings and picks.

Best for: A first bass where the amplifier should not have to be replaced immediately.

    7.8/10

  3. Rocktile Pro BB104-B BattleBone

    24 frets · two humbuckers · long scale 86.4 cm (34 in) · 3.7 kg (8.2 lb)

The specified instrument in this family: 24 frets, two humbuckers with two volume and two tone controls, a long 86.4 cm (34 in) scale, a 43 mm (1.69 in) nut and a stated weight of 3.7 kg (8.2 lb).

Best for: A second bass, or a first one for somebody who already has an amp.

    7.8/10

A bass with the full reach

The number of frets decides how far up you can go. It is the first thing that limits you once you leave plain accompaniment.

MAX GigKit Bass

Being worn standing for a whole gig

A long-scale ash bass goes past four and a half kilos, strapped on for an hour. The stated weight is what decides the second half of the set.

Who each family suits, across bass guitars

Rhythmic accompaniment
A four-string bass covers the vast majority of the repertoire. The standard format and the easiest to approach.
Extended range
A fifth string adds low notes used in several current styles. The neck is wider and calls for an adjustment.
A short-scale bass for small hands
Short-scale basses reduce the spacing between frets. A real comfort for smaller hands, with a slightly different tone.

What you gain and what you give up, on bass guitars

Four strings against five
Four strings cover the everyday repertoire and keep a narrow neck. Five strings go lower and widen the neck noticeably.
Long scale against comfort
A long scale gives more defined lows and a wider fret spacing. A short scale plays more easily.
Passive against active
Passive electronics are simple, battery-free and sound natural; active offers onboard tone shaping and needs a battery you will forget.

Frequent questions on bass guitars

Can a bass be plugged into a guitar amp?

It is inadvisable: a guitar amp’s speaker is not built for these frequencies and can be damaged. A bass amp is required.

Four or five strings to start?

Four strings, in almost every case. The fifth string is added when a specific style calls for it.

Do bass strings last long?

Markedly longer than guitar strings, and they lose their brightness over time. Some bassists actively want that dull sound.

Fingers or pick?

The two techniques give different sounds and coexist in every style. Starting with the fingers develops better independence.

What is an active bass?

A bass with an onboard preamp powered by a battery, allowing tone shaping on the instrument. A dead battery cuts the sound.

Is a bass neck difficult?

The fret spacing is wider than on a guitar and the strings thicker. A short scale reduces that difficulty appreciably.

Do I need a powerful amp?

To practice alone, a small amp is enough. In a band with drums, you need far more power than a guitarist would imagine.

Does a short scale spoil the sound?

It gives a slightly rounder low end and lower tension, which some players want. It does need strings made for that length, and the choice there is narrower.

What stays with you, on bass guitars

A bass does not go into a guitar amp: the speaker is not made for those frequencies. Four strings cover the everyday repertoire, a short scale relieves small hands — and in a band you need far more power than you would think.
