Alesis Turbo Mesh Kit review

The smaller Alesis mesh kit: an 8-inch snare, three 8-inch mesh toms, three 10-inch cymbals and Alesis-made hi-hat and kick pedals, with a steel rack and 100 free Melodics lessons.

What it amounts to The cheapest way into mesh heads from a maker that supports its kits — with fewer sounds and a smaller snare as the trade.

The Turbo Mesh is the entry point of the Alesis range, and it makes one decision well: every pad is mesh, at the lowest price the company offers it.

That is the decision that matters in a flat. Rubber pads are loud in the room and louder in the floor below; mesh is quiet in both and feels closer to a drum head under the stick. Alesis pairs it with a steel rack, its own hi-hat and kick pedals, sticks, a drum key and the power adapter — everything needed to play on the day it arrives.

The module is modest by comparison with the Nitro Max: ten kits, over a hundred sounds, thirty play-along tracks, a metronome and a drum coach. For a first year of practice that is enough, and the hundred free Melodics lessons are a better use of the first month than a longer sound list would be.

One practical note from the price data: at the time of writing, live offers existed on the German, US and Spanish stores only, and the Spanish price stood well above the German one.

In its favor, and its limits

Strengths

  • Mesh heads throughout, at the bottom of the Alesis range on this shelf
  • Drumsticks, drum key and adapter are in the box — three things a kit is useless without
  • A drum coach and a metronome in the module, which is what a first month actually needs
  • Steel rack rather than a plastic frame

Compromises

  • Ten kits and 100 sounds against 32 kits and 440 on the Nitro Max
  • Live offers were limited at the time of writing: DE, US and ES only, and the ES price was far above the DE one

The questions players ask

How is this different from the Nitro Max?

Smaller snare (8 inch rather than 10 inch dual-zone), fewer sounds, and no Bluetooth or Zildjian samples. The mesh heads — the part that keeps the noise down — are on both.

Is anything missing from the box?

Alesis lists the rack, cables, sticks, drum key and power adapter as included, which covers everything needed to play. A throne and headphones are not part of this kit.
