Do digital pianos need tuning?

No. The pitch is generated electronically and does not drift, which is one of the main practical advantages over an acoustic piano — no tuner visits, and no seasonal movement with humidity.

What replaces tuning

Nothing, on the pitch side. What a digital piano does need is the occasional firmware update on models that offer one, and clean contacts under the keys after years of dust.

What acoustic owners pay for

Tuning twice a year, regulation, and a stable room. That is the cost that digital instruments remove, and over a decade it is substantial.

The trade

An acoustic piano ages into something particular. A digital one does not change, which is either reassuring or dull depending on what you want from it.

The questions players ask

What about the transpose function?

That shifts pitch deliberately, usually to match a singer. It is a setting, not tuning, and it resets when the instrument is switched off on most models.

Do the keys need any maintenance?

Very little: keep dust and liquid out, and wipe the keys with a barely damp cloth. Mechanical noise developing over years is the usual sign of wear.
