A dry brush or a vacuum on low removes the dust that collects in the weave. Avoid soaking them — the weave holds water and the metal rim underneath is not meant to sit wet.
What actually needs attention
Tension, evenly across the lugs. Cleaning is cosmetic; tension is what decides feel and reliable triggering.
How to clean
A soft brush, or a vacuum held slightly off the surface. Nothing wet.
When to replace
A visibly torn weave, or a head that will no longer hold even tension. Both are obvious once you look.
Check your own manual before you plug anything in. Voltage, polarity and current draw differ from model to model, and the manufacturer’s figures take precedence over anything written here. A supply of the wrong polarity can damage a pedal in seconds, phantom power is safe for most microphones but not for every one, and the required voltage is printed next to the socket or stated in the manual — not inferred from a connector that happens to fit.
The questions players ask
Does dust affect triggering?
Not meaningfully. Tension does, which is why a head that seems to have gone wrong usually needs the key rather than a cloth.
How long do they last?
Years, unless the weave tears. They are re-tensioned rather than replaced on a schedule.
