On an electronic kit, mesh heads last a long time and are re-tensioned rather than replaced — they need changing when the weave tears or will no longer hold tension. Acoustic heads are a different consumable entirely.
Tension before replacement
Most “worn out” mesh heads are simply slack. Tension evenly across the lugs before assuming anything is finished.
What actually ends a head
A torn weave, or a rim that no longer pulls evenly. Both are visible.
The order of wear on a kit
Sticks first, then the snare head, then pedal parts. The module and the pads themselves outlast all of it.
The questions players ask
How do I know a mesh head is finished?
It will not hold even tension across the lugs, or the weave has visibly torn. Both are obvious once you look, and both cause trigger problems first.
Can I replace one pad’s head?
Yes — they are sold by size, and the snare usually goes first because it takes most of the strokes.
