Overdrive is the first pedal nearly everyone buys, and at forty-three dollars this is a low-risk way to find out whether you like it in front of your amplifier.

The voicing is the classic tube-screamer style: a mid-focused push that makes a clean amp bark without turning everything to fuzz. It is the reference sound for a great deal of blues and rock rhythm playing.

The important part of this page is not the sound, it is the socket. Pedals expect 9 V DC, center negative, and a supply of the wrong polarity or voltage can kill one in seconds. No supply is included here. If you already own a pedal power supply, check its polarity symbol against the one printed on this pedal before plugging in.

Behringer does not state true bypass for this model, so this page does not claim it.

The questions players ask

What does center negative mean?

The polarity of the DC plug: the outer sleeve is positive and the center pin negative. It is the pedal convention, and a supply wired the other way round can damage a pedal immediately. The symbol is printed next to the socket on almost every pedal.

Can I run it from a battery?

Most pedals in this class accept a 9 V battery, and the manual states whether this one does. A battery avoids the polarity question entirely, at the cost of remembering to unplug the cable so it does not drain.
