Mesh, on every pad you can afford it on. Mesh is quieter in the room and under the stick, and it rebounds far closer to a real drum head, which is what makes practice transfer to an acoustic kit.
Feel
A rubber pad returns the stick abruptly and with a hard shock into the wrist. A tensioned mesh head behaves much more like a drum head, which is why technique built on it transfers.
Noise
Rubber is audibly louder in the room, and the impact is sharper into the frame and the floor. In a shared building that difference is the whole argument.
What mesh does not fix
The kick pedal. Whatever the pads are made of, a beater striking a tower is what travels through a floor.
The questions players ask
Is mesh always more expensive?
It used to be. The Alesis Turbo Mesh in our catalog puts mesh on every pad at the bottom of the range, which was not true a few years ago.
Does mesh need tuning?
Yes, and that is a feature: the tension sets the feel. A slack head feels dead and can trigger unreliably; a taut one bounces back.
