What does dual zone mean on a drum pad?

The head and the rim trigger separately, so a rim shot or a cross-stick produces a different sound from a center hit. On a snare it is the difference between a pad and something that plays like a drum.

What it changes in playing

Cross-sticks, rim shots and rim clicks all become available, and those are ordinary parts of the vocabulary rather than advanced techniques.

Why the snare first

It is the pad that receives the majority of strokes in nearly every pattern, so it is where expression is either possible or not.

What to check on the listing

The word “dual-zone” against the snare specifically. Kits often carry it on one pad and not the rest, and the listing rarely makes that obvious.

The questions players ask

Which pads benefit most?

The snare, by a distance — it takes most of the strokes and most of the technique. Toms benefit less, and cymbals use choke rather than zones.

Which kit in your catalog has it?

The Alesis Nitro Max lists a 10-inch dual-zone mesh snare, which is unusual at its price.
