Rocktile Pro BB104-B BattleBone review

The specified instrument in this family: 24 frets, two humbuckers with two volume and two tone controls, a long 86.4 cm (34 in) scale, a 43 mm (1.69 in) nut and a stated weight of 3.7 kg (8.2 lb).

What it amounts to The most fully specified instrument in this group, and the one to choose if the amp is already sorted.

Rocktile publishes more about this bass than most makers publish about instruments costing three times as much: body wood, neck wood, fingerboard, scale length in centimeters, nut width in millimeters, fret count, finish and weight.

That matters because those are the numbers that decide fit. An 86.4 cm (34 in) long scale is the standard; a 43 mm (1.69 in) nut is a normal bass width; 3.7 kg (8.2 lb) is comfortably light for an hour on a strap.

The electronics are the other difference in this family. Two humbuckers with two volume and two tone controls give a genuine range — a bridge-only bark, a neck-heavy round tone, and everything in between — where the other basses here fix the sound at one position.

Note what is not included: there is no amplifier. This is an instrument on its own, and the accompanying strap — nylon, 5 cm (2 in) wide, adjustable between 83 and 142 cm (55.9 in) — is the only accessory in the box.

In its favor, and its limits

Strengths

  • Every dimension is published — scale, nut width, weight — which almost nothing else here does
  • Two humbuckers with independent volume and tone: a real range of sounds
  • 24 frets, two octaves on the lowest string
  • A 5 cm (2 in) nylon strap is supplied, and strap width is what decides shoulder comfort on a bass

Compromises

  • No amplifier in this set — it is an instrument, not a starter package
  • No US or UK offer at the time of writing

The questions players ask

What does long scale mean?

The vibrating string length — here 86.4 cm (34 in), about 34 inches — which is the standard the repertoire and most strings assume. Short-scale basses at around 30 inches suit smaller hands and have their own sound; strings are not interchangeable between the two.

Why does the published weight matter?

A bass is worn for the length of a rehearsal. At 3.7 kg (8.2 lb) this is on the lighter side of normal, and it is the sort of figure that is almost never stated at this price.
