Youshares AT2020 windscreens

Two foam windscreens rather than a pop filter: they slip over the capsule instead of standing in front of it, they are made for the Audio-Technica AT2020 and AT2035, and there is no mount at all.

What it is
Two foam windscreen covers that slip over the microphone. Not a gooseneck pop filter — there is no mesh, no gooseneck and no clamp
Quantity
Two, which is the only multi-pack on this shelf besides the three-filter package
Stated compatibility
Audio-Technica AT2020, AT2020USB and AT2020USB+, with the AT-2035 named in the title
Material
Quilted foam, which Youshares states is durable and easy to clean
Stated purpose
Noise cancellation and background noise, plus protecting the microphone from dust and moisture
Weight
18 g (0.6 oz) — the lightest item on this shelf
Mount
None. It is held by its own elasticity over the capsule
Layers
One, of foam. Two filters on this shelf publish two and three layers of mixed materials
Amazon reference

EAN

  • Two in the pack, so one can be washed while the other is in use
  • No mount to fail, no clamp to find a shaft for, and nothing to droop
  • It is a windscreen, not a pop filter — foam on the capsule is less effective against plosives than mesh at a distance

Best for: An AT2020 or AT2035 that has to travel, where a gooseneck and a clamp are two things too many.

Two foam windscreen covers, for the Audio-Technica AT2020, AT2020USB, AT2020USB+ and AT-2035. Quilted foam, stated durable and easy to clean. 18 g. No mount, no mesh, no gooseneck.

This page opens on what it is because the shelf is called pop filters and this is not one.

A pop filter is mesh suspended a few centimeters in front of the capsule. The plosive — the fist of air behind a P or a B — loses energy crossing the gap, and the mesh scatters what reaches it. One filter on this shelf publishes two layers with an air gap, which is that principle twice over.

A windscreen is foam on the capsule itself, stopping moving air where it arrives. It is better outdoors against wind and it is less effective against a hard consonant at six inches. It also costs a little high frequency, which the page for another filter on this shelf records as its own con.

So the two objects answer the same complaint by different means, and the honest framing is which problem is being solved.

What this does well is travel. Nothing to clamp, nothing to position, nothing to droop, 18 g (0.6 oz) — the lightest thing on this shelf. Two in the pack means one can be washed and dried while the other works, and foam that has been breathed into for a month does need washing.

What it will not tell you is what else it fits. Four Audio-Technica models are named and nothing else is, where another filter on this shelf names seven microphones across five makers.

The questions players ask

Is a windscreen the same as a pop filter?

No, and the difference matters. A pop filter is mesh held a few centimeters in front of the capsule: the plosive loses its energy crossing the gap and the mesh scatters what is left. A windscreen is foam directly on the capsule, which stops moving air at the point it arrives. Foam is better against wind outdoors and less effective against a hard P at close range — and the page for another filter on this shelf notes the cost in its own words: foam takes a little high frequency with it.

Why would I choose this over a gooseneck filter?

Because there is nothing to mount. No clamp to find a shaft for, no gooseneck to droop, nothing to adjust between takes, and 18 g (0.6 oz) in a bag. For a microphone that moves — a field recording, a podcast at a table, a camera-mounted shotgun — that is the whole argument. For a voice six inches from a condenser in a room, mesh at a distance works better.
