It shifts the pitch of the whole keyboard up or down in semitones so you can keep playing familiar shapes in a different key — most often to suit a singer, or to play along with a recording that is not in a comfortable key.
What it changes
The pitch that each key produces. Play a C major shape with transpose at +2 and you hear D major.
When it earns its place
Accompanying a singer whose comfortable key is awkward on the keyboard, and playing along with a recording in five flats.
What stays with you, on these music instruments and gear
Write down that it is on. A transposed instrument left overnight is the source of a great deal of confusion the next day.
The questions players ask
Does it retune the instrument?
No. It is a setting that shifts what each key sounds, and on most instruments it resets when they are switched off.
Is using it cheating?
It is the keyboard equivalent of a capo. Nobody thinks a capo is cheating.
