Can I learn piano on a keyboard?

You can learn notes, reading and repertoire on any full-size keyboard. What you cannot build is the touch that a weighted action develops, and that is what makes a transition to an acoustic piano feel unfamiliar.

What transfers

Note reading, rhythm, hand independence, repertoire and theory — all of it.

What does not

Dynamic control built on physical resistance. An unweighted key reaches the bottom with the same effort however you play, so the hand learns nothing about weight.

The practical answer

Start on what you have. If lessons continue past the first year, the weighted instrument becomes the next purchase rather than the first one.

The questions players ask

How much does the action really matter?

Enough that teachers raise it, and not enough to stop anyone starting. Full-size keys matter more in the first months; a weighted action matters more in the second year.

What is the cheapest instrument that will not hold me back?

A weighted 88-key portable. Our digital piano family starts there, and the difference against an unweighted keyboard is audible in the hands within a week.
