Sold as a pair, unlike much of this category: 2-way bass-reflex monitors with a 4.5-inch woofer, a stated 60 Hz – 22 kHz response, 102 dB SPL maximum, and ROOM CONTROL and HIGH TRIM switches on the back.
What it amounts to The small-room monitor: a published response, room compensation on the back, and both speakers in one box.
Studio monitors are usually sold one at a time and photographed in pairs, which is the origin of a great many disappointed deliveries. Yamaha states that the HS4 is a stereo pair, and that alone is worth saying first.
The specification is published in full: a 4.5-inch woofer and 1-inch dome tweeter, 60 Hz to 22 kHz, 102 dB SPL maximum, Class-D amplification in MDF cabinets. Sixty hertz is where the low end stops, which is honest for a woofer this size and worth knowing before judging a mix’s bass on them.
The back panel is where the value is. ROOM CONTROL and HIGH TRIM let you compensate for a room you cannot treat — most desks sit against a wall, and a wall adds low end that is not in the recording.
The connections cover everything: XLR/TRS combo for an interface, RCA and a stereo mini jack for a laptop or a phone. Cables and anti-slip pads are in the box.
In its favor, and its limits
Strengths
ROOM CONTROL is the setting that makes a monitor usable against a wall, which is where most desks are
Takes XLR, TRS, RCA and 3.5 mm (0.14 in) — it will connect to whatever you own
Sold as a pair, with cables and anti-slip pads included
MDF cabinets rather than plastic, at a size that suits a small desk
Compromises
A 4.5-inch woofer reaches 60 Hz — the bottom octave is not there, by design
No US offer at the time of writing, and the UK price stood above the German one

The questions players ask
What does ROOM CONTROL do?
It attenuates low frequencies to compensate for the boost a wall or a corner adds. In a small room with the desk against a wall — which is most home studios — it is the difference between accurate low end and a permanent bass hump.
Are they sold singly or in pairs?
Yamaha states a pair for this model. That is not the norm: professional monitors are conventionally sold one at a time, using the same photograph, and it catches buyers out constantly.
