Do electronic drum kits need a mat?

A mat stops the rack creeping across a hard floor and absorbs some of the vibration going into it. In a flat it is one of the cheapest useful additions, and it is not a substitute for a proper riser.

The two jobs

Stop the kit moving, and reduce what passes into the floor. A mat does the first well and the second slightly.

Why kits creep

Every kick stroke pushes the pedal forward against a smooth floor. Over an hour the whole kit has traveled.

The upgrade path

Mat first, because it is cheap and immediate. Riser next, if there is someone below you.

The questions players ask

Mat or riser?

A mat stops movement and takes a little vibration. A riser decouples the kit from the floor, which is what actually reduces what the flat below hears.

Will a rug do?

Yes, and a thick one does more than a thin one. Anything that stops the pedals walking away is already earning its place.
