Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (4th Gen) review

Two microphone preamps rather than one, plus Auto Gain to set levels and Clip Safe to stop a take being destroyed by a loud moment. The interface most home studios settle on and stop replacing.

What it amounts to The interface to buy if you can afford it once — two inputs solve a problem the Solo cannot, and everything else is identical.

The 2i2 differs from the Solo in one way that matters and several that do not. It has two microphone preamps, so two sources can be recorded at the same moment onto separate tracks.

That is the whole question. Recording a singer who plays guitar at the same time, two voices for a podcast, or a stereo pair on an acoustic instrument: none of them are possible on a single preamp, and all of them are ordinary requests.

The fourth generation adds two features aimed squarely at beginners. Auto Gain sets the input level, which is the thing most people get wrong by recording far too quietly and then amplifying the noise along with the take. Clip Safe watches for overload on the way in. Neither replaces experience, and both remove a category of ruined recording.

Everything else — the 120 dB converters, Air mode, the software bundle — matches the Solo. If the budget stretches, this is the one that does not need replacing.

In its favor, and its limits

Strengths

  • Two preamps: a voice and a guitar, or two singers, in the same take
  • Auto Gain removes the single most common beginner failure — a level set by guesswork
  • Clip Safe protects a take from the one loud moment that would otherwise ruin it
  • The step most people eventually take anyway, taken once instead of twice

Compromises

  • Roughly ninety dollars more than the Solo for a second preamp you may never use
  • Auto Gain sets a level; it does not choose a microphone position for you

The questions players ask

Is Auto Gain a gimmick?

It addresses a real and very common failure: recording too quietly and lifting it later, which lifts the noise with it. Focusrite states it sets the level for you; it does not replace judgment about where the microphone sits.

Does it need external power?

The listing describes a USB-C connection. Phantom power for a condenser microphone comes from the interface itself and is switched on the front panel.
