What do I need to start a podcast?

A USB microphone, a pop filter, wired headphones and something to record into. That is four items and one cable, and everything beyond it — interfaces, arms, treatment — is an improvement rather than a requirement.

The minimum that sounds good

A USB condenser with a headphone socket, a pop filter, closed-back headphones and free recording software. That combination produces publishable audio in an ordinary room.

The first upgrade

Not a better microphone — the room. A duvet behind you, a few thick panels, or recording in a smaller soft space changes more than doubling the microphone budget.

When to move to XLR

When a second voice is involved, or when the microphone will also be used for music. Then the interface, the cable and phantom power all arrive at once.

The questions players ask

Do I need an interface?

Not with a USB microphone. An interface becomes necessary when a second person needs a second microphone in the same room, or when you move to XLR.

What about two people?

Two USB microphones on one computer is awkward. Two XLR microphones into a two-preamp interface — like the Scarlett 2i2 — is the standard answer.
